THe Times they are a-changin
The Mission District was once a neighborhood with overwhelming diversity. It was affordable and was one of the reasons why San Francisco became the place to be in the late 1900s. You could get anything from different parts of the world within an eight block radius. Their were so many diverse shops and restaurants that you could never stop exploring . It was home to immigrants from all over the world who came to pursue the American Dream.
Many people used to migrate to the Mission District because it was a cultural haven and simply affordable. Businesses were able to compete with other foreigners and that lead to better quality goods for consumers. Everything was affordable and allowed for minorities and lower class people to strive. |
However, with the influx of rich tech workers the rent prices went up and the diversity went down. San Francisco is still diverse, but not as it was before. Some people argue that the Mission District is developing a new identity that caters mostly to the upper middle class professional. The parks that were created for kids to play soccer are now overrun with adults in their 20s. The small family shops are now upscale barbershops or salons. The authentic greek yogurt that was once available, has now become a Nubi's Frozen Yogurt. The La Vics Taqueria that was once on the corner of Valencia and 19th Streeet is now a chipotle. The traditional diversity that existed is becoming overran with American corporations that are "diverse". Small family businesses were not competing with each other, but with corporations thirsty for new tech money. |
